When you live in a place as beautiful as Oro-Medonte, your home should be a sanctuary that reflects the natural beauty of Simcoe County. However, for a homeowner on Melville Court, just off Line 5, the reality of their living situation didn't quite match the serenity of the area.

Proximity to a major highway meant constant road noise, and aging windows were leading to staggering energy bills and uncomfortable "cold zones" throughout the house. At Big Red Home Comfort, we recently completed a total exterior transformation that addressed these technical failures while completely reimagining the home’s aesthetic.

Here is the breakdown of how we took a dated, noisy residence and turned it into a quiet, contemporary, and rebate-eligible retreat.

The Battle Against Highway Noise: The Triple Pane Advantage

The most pressing concern for this project was the acoustic environment. Living near a highway provides convenience for commuting, but the constant hum of traffic can significantly impact your quality of life.

To solve this, we recommended a transition to high-performance triple pane windows. Unlike standard double-pane units, triple-pane windows provide an extra layer of glass and a second insulating chamber of gas. This acts as a massive "sound sponge," dampening high-frequency road noise before it ever reaches the interior.

Why Cardinal LowE180?

For the glass, we utilized Cardinal LowE180. In the Ontario climate, this glass is a game-changer for several reasons:

  1. Thermal Retention: It is designed to keep heat inside during the winter and out during the summer.

  2. Rebate Eligibility: This specific configuration meets the strict requirements for current Ontario energy rebates, allowing the homeowners to recoup a significant portion of their investment.

  3. Clarity: It provides incredible insulation without that "tinted" look often found in lower-quality efficiency glass.

To Grill or Not to Grill?

One of the more delicate parts of this renovation was a design debate: the window grills. The homeowners were initially hesitant to remove them, fearing the home might lose its traditional character. However, window grills (or "muntins") can actually impede energy efficiency by creating more surface area for thermal transfer. More importantly, they "break up" the view. After seeing the sleek, low-profile frames we planned to use, the homeowners decided to go for a clean, grill-free look. The result was an immediate modernization of the home’s silhouette and a massive increase in natural light.

Solving the Mystery of the Freezing Floors

The home featured a prominent bay window that had become a source of frustration. During the winter, the floor directly in front of the bay was virtually unusable because it was so cold.

Upon dismantling the old unit, we found a common construction oversight: little to no insulation in the bay's floor and roof cavity.

Privacy and Performance

We rebuilt the bay with a specialized triple-pane configuration. Our goal was twofold:

  • Comfort: We packed the structure with high-grade insulation to eliminate the "ice floor" effect.

  • Privacy: Because the bay faces potential onlookers, we used a specific glass configuration that creates a sense of privacy from the outside looking in, while maintaining a perfectly clear, unobstructed view for the homeowners looking out.

Transforming the Basement into a Backyard Oasis

The basement was previously a dark area with an "unreliable" garden door that was difficult to lock and prone to drafts. Since this area leads directly to the pool and backyard, we wanted to make the transition seamless.

  1. The New Slider: We replaced the garden door with a wide-open sliding door system complete with a heavy-duty screen. This instantly made the backyard feel like an extension of the living room.

  2. Expanded Vistas: To further brighten the space, we enlarged the window openings. We installed fixed casement windows for maximum glass area and added one very large awning window to provide massive airflow even during light rain.

The "Iron Ore" and "Dover Grey" Aesthetic

To bring the home into 2026, we moved away from the traditional white frames and light blue siding. We opted for a low-profile contemporary window finished in a stunning Iron Ore.

Iron Ore is a sophisticated, deep charcoal that provides a high-contrast, modern look without being as "harsh" as a true black. To create a cohesive design language across the entire property, we didn't stop at the windows:

  • Aluminum Capping: We replaced the trim around the garage door with Iron Ore aluminum capping.

  • Front Posts: The two large structural posts on the front of the home were also capped in matching Iron Ore, tying the whole front elevation together.

  • New Siding: We stripped away the outdated light blue siding and replaced it with a sleek Board and Batten siding in Dover Grey. This vertical orientation adds height to the home and provides a perfect neutral backdrop for the Iron Ore accents.

A Grand (and Secure) Entrance

The final piece of the puzzle was the front entry. We removed the old-fashioned screen door that was hiding the home’s potential and installed a Spanish Oak fiberglass front entry.

Form Meets Function

  • Fiberglass Durability: Unlike real wood, Spanish Oak fiberglass won't warp or rot in the Simcoe County humidity, yet it maintains the warm, rich texture of natural timber.

  • Interior Details: We installed matching casing on the interior, ensuring the door looks like a custom-integrated piece of the home’s architecture.

  • Maximum Security: For ultimate peace of mind, we equipped the door with a Ferco multi-point locking system. This system engages the door frame at multiple points, making it incredibly durable against forced entry and ensuring a tight, weather-proof seal every time it's closed.

Conclusion: Your Home, Only Better

The transformation on Melville Court is a testament to what happens when you combine modern building science with thoughtful design. The home is now whisper-quiet, incredibly energy-efficient, and boasts a curb appeal that is the envy of the neighborhood.
